Image: PA THE UK’S SHADOW Northern Ireland secretary has said he would call a border poll if the circumstances were right.The UK’s Northern Ireland Secretary has the power to call a referendum on Irish unity. Labour has held a comfortable poll lead over the Conservative Party dating back to last December.
“These are all inter-related aspects of the debate but actually that crucial aspect of when there is a clear majority, which is what was set out in the Good Friday Agreement, that is a different thing altogether,” he told the BBC’s Sunday Politics show at the UK Labour Party conference. “So constitutional issues are important but don’t pretend that it is a distraction from the real issues.”Kyle also said if Labour comes to power and he becomes the secretary of state for Northern Ireland, and it is clear that those circumstances emerge, he would set out the criteria in detail.
“We have a small window of opportunity now. We have a new Prime Minister, a new Secretary of State, and we also have a new head of state. I think we have got a great opportunity to really seize the moment and move forward.”

The Northern Ireland secretary will call a border poll at some stage. Probably not in the next 5-10 years though. Depends on how the economy goes and how people feel they are being treated by the state which is probably linked.
If the circumstances were right. Which is about as not committed as a person could be.
