'Please stop talking about wet pubs. That's just a f**king pub'

In Ireland, you'd be hard pushed to find a soul around the country who won't let out a heavy sigh at the mention of the term "wet pub".

A 'wet' pub, for the purposes of coronavirus restrictions, is a bar that does not serve food – one that can't operate as a restaurant. Here, the very word can send vintners into a rage – which might be why the Government carefully avoided it last week while telling wet publicans they can't open for December.

The UK lags behind us when it comes to the fire and fury evoked by debates around wet pubs – but, if social media is anything to go by, they're about to have a similar argument of their own.It was a line that one of our own politicos might have used a few months ago – as was the same observer's follow-up line: "That's just a f**king pub."
