Uefa have fined the FAI €20,000. Image: PA EUROPEAN FOOTBALL GOVERNING body Uefa have the Football Association of Ireland €20,000 over the pro-IRA chants sung by members of the Irish women’s national team while celebrating their World Cup play-off win against Scotland in October.
Some members of the squad were filmed chanting ‘Ooh Aah, up the Ra’ while singing The Wolfe Tone’s ‘Celtic Symphony’ in celebrating a historic win which earned qualification for the World Cup for the very first time.Uefa opened an investigation into the chants citing “potential inappropriate behaviour”, and have today fined the FAI €20,000 for what they deem as a “violation of the basic rules of decent conduct.
Fuck UEFA
Don't England fans sing no surrender a reference to Loyalist Paramilitaries when singing GSTK?
Pro war-crime chanting will be a huge problem in the future: UEFA had to act. Listen to Celtic Symphony & spot the Wolfe Tones trick. They stuffed a Provo chant into a run of the mill ballad about football and naive people fell for it. Here:
Celtic Symphony is not a pro-IRA song. It is a song about Celtic Football Club. This fine is a disgrace. On the same day UEFA fine Sevilla a 1/4 of the amount for actual racist chanting at their games
Paying a fine for pro IRA support is easy but how do we change pro IRA mind set. The reaction of present & would be sponsors to the Irish women’s team’s UEFA sanction is going to be very very interesting.
