The Dáil will return for two reduced sittings next week. TDs will gather in the Convention Centre on Wednesday and Thursday for a maximum of six hours but attendance will be limited to 45 TDs each day.

TDs will gather in the Convention Centre on Wednesday and Thursday for a maximum of six hours but attendance will be limited to 45 TDs each day.Originally, the Ceann Comhairle and the Dáil clerk suggested that TDs gather only once per week for the rest of the month in order to tackle the pandemic.

Opposition parties were vehemently against the measures, with Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty saying any suggestion that parliament would sit for a half day per week during a national emergency was "not on". Exact business has not yet been agreed but it is likely that Wednesday's session would include Leaders' Questions and questions and statements on Covid with the Health Minister. However, Oireachtas committees are unlikely to sit during January as there is an issue with having members present.

Sources said today's meeting was cordial and there was a recognition of the need to strike a balance between protecting public health and the requirement for a functioning parliament. Prior to the meeting, Government Chief Whip Jack Chambers said the Government would work with the opposition to try and get a cross party consensus on Dáil sittings.

Very convenient it is for the imposter government

When did that many ever turn up on the same day

We can accommodate 3 times that amount (according to Reopening Schools Plan) in the PE Hall in our 'completely safe school'. They can have full use 2 days a week and share with the 6th Years the other 3 days. Happy to help.

Oh my God!!! Read the bloody room!! Can’t actually believe the tone deafness of this!!! 🤯🤯😡😡

H

That's a handy number.

So people working in shops and industry can go to work and they want to put 20 to 30 young adults in a class room but they want to protect themselves and to hell with the rest of ye. In the middle of a pandemic this is just not acceptable. MichealMartinTD LeoVaradkar

My heroes

What’s the point in paying for the convention centre if it’s still constraining numbers?

What’s the building in the picture please? I am not Irish. I looked up Dáil in Wikipedia and it said that they meet in Leinster House, which looks nothing like the building in the picture.

I hope one of the first things they discuss is the justification for their inflated FULL salaries while the rest of the country survives on PUP. Ministers and Junior Ministers full pay yes - remainder 30%, and even that is the Annual pay of a lot of people.

How patriotic of them 😏
