The parents of two 11-year-old twins with autism who have been denied appropriate schooling have been told by the Minister for Special Education that their children will be given places in a special school.

Gillian Milne and her husband, Darren, have been pleading for the State to intervene and provide such a place for the twins, who are non-verbal and have a range of other special needs.

She committed to touching base with them on a weekly basis until the places are finalised, Ms Milne told Prime Time. "We had to open up our family story twice on Prime Time to get this result. It's terrible that these are the lengths that we had to go to so secure a school place for our boys because they have special needs," he said.

Identical twins Ryan and Kyle were born in 2011 and were diagnosed with autism when they were two-and-a-half years old.Mr Milne has given up his job to help look after the twins. Faced with the threat of repossession, the family are also due to become tenants in their own home when a housing charity acquires the house.

Delighted for them. Pity they had to go public twice as it's not easy. Unfortunately their horrific story is not an isolated one, as there are many autistic children with no school placements, or unable to attend as the supports they need are non existent

Half the money being spent on hotels for asylum spoofers would make a massive difference for disability services. The country is criminally underfunded and under serviced in disability needs and mental health support

Should have happened years ago! Delighted for the boys and they're parents

This is good news. It shows what the government CAN do if and when they put their mind to it. Now, step up to the mark and start taking care of business and start working to help the people of Ireland

Taoiseach apology 'too late' - mother of autistic boysThe mother of two 11-year-old twins with autism who have been denied appropriate schooling has said that an apology from Taoiseach Micheál Martin is 'too little, too late'. Don't bite the hand that can solve your issue! Only apologising, because its gone public! Our country is rotten Two 11-year-old twins, eh? As opposed to what? Four 11-year-old twins? Tweety is being facetious. The story is repugnant and the apology rings hollow.

'Roughly 160' children without place in special schoolsThe Chief Executive of the National Council for Special Education has said there are 'roughly 160' children nationally who do not have a special educational needs place in school, and that they do not have an exact figure for how many must travel outside their catchment area for such a place. I can’t begin to understand the plight of these children but I heard John Kearney on Radio 1 this eve and he appeared totally out of touch with the reality of the situation and would do nothing to ease the minds of parents or children, it was embarrassing to listen to him! Ok so you have the numbers, do something about creating places. Train up more staff
