JUST IN - TV licence fees sales plummet by 37% in third week of July amid RTE financial scandal

The number of TV licences fees sold in the third week of July plummeted by 37%, new figures have shown.

A spokesman for the Department confirmed that during the third week of July, 9,279 licences were sold.It represents a drop of 37% or 5,557 fewer licences. Further revelations raised questions about the national broadcaster’s spending, including the use of a “barter account” for corporate hospitality.Speaking last week, Media Minister Catherine Martin said that she was monitoring if a trend would emerge in the drop off of TV licence sales.

Minister Martin said that her opinion is that the drop in figures “likely reflect the public sentiment and immediacy at the height of its controversy, which I can understand”.
