The Tubridy Effect: As he carves out a brand new life and career in London with Virgin Radio, Andrea Smith looks at what’s in store for former RTÉ presenter Ryan Tubridy

What a difference a year makes. This time last year, Ryan Tubridy was the “golden boy” of RTÉ, hosting its flagship TV show, The Late Late Show , and a weekday radio show.

Public profile While he is delighted with the new gig, going from being an enormous fish in a small pond to a minnow in an ocean is likely to have come as a shock to Ryan’s senses. UK media is a whole different beast to its Irish counterpart, and Virgin Radio has a weekly listenership of only 1.4 million people, which compares unfavourably to BBC Radio 2 and Heart FM .

When he finished with The Late Late Show , President Michael D. Higgins invited Ryan to the Áras to record a final interview. Bono and The Edge presented him with a red Vespa, and his hero, Paul McCartney, sent a good luck video message. Opportunities While the subject of Ryan’s RTÉ remuneration is a delicate one, he earned over €500,000 per year there. When he was in talks to return to the station, his revised salary was agreed at €170,000 per year, but these talks ultimately broke down.

“I always wanted to go to London, I always wanted to investigate radio and TV over there but I never did it,” he explained. “I was thinking about it, I was procrastinating, I was thinking, ‘Maybe some day’, and I was ‘Maybe some day-ing’ my life away.” Family The timing is also good for Ryan’s move as his beloved girls are now grown-up. He has two daughters, Ella, 24, and Julia, 18, from his previous marriage to broadcaster Anne Marie Power. It would probably have been difficult for Ryan to live in a different country before now as he was co-parenting the girls when they were younger, but they are now independent adults.

“You need manners put on you at times, and for someone you trust to say, ‘Why would you say that? You sound mad!’” he explained. New friends It’s unlikely that Tubs will be lonely when Clare’s not there though as Irish personalities living in London have always flocked together. Back in 2014, a gang called the LIC started up, with members like former Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore and musicians Niall Horan and Bressie meeting up for drinks.
