Many people turn to religion at times of crisis and Donald Trump knows this current stance will appeal to the conservative Christian voters who helped him win the presidency, writes Washington Correspondent Brian O'Donovan

For a second evening in a row, phones pinged simultaneously across Washington DC with an alert from the city's mayor warning that a 7pm curfew would be enforced.

It has become a familiar scene over the last week but there was a difference today, a big difference in the form of a tall, metal fence that had been erected around the White House perimeter to keep the demonstrators back. There would be a visit to another holy place the following day with President Trump and First Lady Melania paying their respects at a shrine to Saint John Paul II.Catholic Archbishop of Washington Wilton Gregory said he opposed letting the president visit the site.

When he returned to the White House following the visit, Mr Trump signed an executive order on religious freedoms.

You are a joke at this stage RTE

What's your problem FakeNews Ireland

what do you call protests that turn violent and when looting starts, a riot!

BRIAN THE HACK

Please ask Brain to stop saying 'unarmed black man'. This says it better than I could:

How low can he go

Christians who oppose abortion are just being Christian Brian! Radical actually, you use 'conservative' to slur, Usual RTE tripe.

Book of Revelations would be useful reading now alright

Yea he handled that Bible like a guilty alter boy

Democrats did nothing on helping to solve any problems, they incite racism, causing this chaos eventually. Same to Europe, when those politicians state we need to help people, are you blind that thousands of homeless sleeping on frozen floor?

RTÉ is THE VIRUS.

It could also mobilise more black voters to turn out to vote against him. But you won't mention that.

More skewed anti-Trump rubbish from RTÉ'S US correspondent

His and others abuse of all things has turned me away from religion! After six decades ! They have used and abused ideologies for their own benefit and not one major Faith eg Catholics /Anglicans has spoken out against he and pseudo faiths which are causing so much division

Yeah, in the same way that CNN/Democratic Party will turn to the looters and arsonists, right?

I literally helped a chruch stock up on supplies (food, medical equipment, water, saftey gear) for the BlackLivesMatter protesters here in DC. This is what church should be, not a prop for a fascist.

Why not report on why Trump was holding the Bible? The church got defaced by 'protesters' who just seem to want everything to burn. oRanGe mAn BaD

No word about the clergy who were literally gassed out of the area before Trump's little photo-op?

Many Irish American Catholics are all for POTUS!

Many people are using the bible as a sign of peace and for people to support each other why can’t trump do the same

Oh god the pain
