Tourism self-catering landlords criticise ‘rushed’ new rules on advertising via IrishTimesBiz

New rules due to be brought in next month that will penalise online platforms, such as Airbnb, that accept ads for short-term rentals without proper planning permission have been described as “rushed” by a representative body for holiday-let landlords.

Under existing rules, the owners of short-term holiday lets in any of the State’s 54 designated rent pressure zones must apply to the relevant local authority for planning permission. Federation chairwoman Máire Ní Mhurchú gave the example of a farm owner 11km outside Killarney, “halfway up a mountain”, who sought permission from the local authority for two self-catering lets on the farm. She says the owner was refused permission for short-term rental even though the properties were “unsuited” to long-term housing rental as they were in the middle of a working farm.

Tourism Ireland concerned about complaints over cost of holidaying in RepublicPrice increases in hotel rates and car hire flagged in ‘low-level feedback’ Maybe they could do something about the price gouging that goes on from their members, or just sit and say it’s terrible this and terrible that and air your concerns but do nothing. Ukrainian imports tying up hotels isn’t helping either for genuine tourists, not just blaggers. It’s an absolute disgrace. The cost of a 3 day city break to Dublin in September is more than 2 weeks all inclusive in most places. Why are hotels and eating out so expensive ? For a country with so little to do except get drunk, see the book of Kells, have a drink in Guinness hop store, pay a fortune to see cliffs of Moher, and ripped off everywhere, surprised any tourists go there
