The garda who smashed Ireland’s most notorious gangs and modernised the force has retired after 39 years – and will be “sorely missed”, senior detectives said on Sunday night .The former hurling star was not only in charge of national policing but was tasked with looking after the security of the State.
He was also in charge of security for high-profile visits such as that of Queen Elizabeth and US President Obama in 2011. Sources said he wasn’t one for hanging around and within four years was promoted to sergeant – almost unheard of at that time. He was to spend almost his entire career in stations in the capital or at Garda HQ apart from short spells at Scotstown in Co Monaghan, Bailieboro, Co Cavan, and Templemore.
Soon he was based at Pearse Street in the south inner city – a busy area that has the Dail and many government departments on its patch. Pre-covid, up to 400,000 people moved through the district by day.
