Coronavirus Ireland updates: Professor Philip Nolan calls for 'great caution' as R-number rises

A leading public health expert has called for "great caution" as it was revealed yesterday that Ireland's reproduction number has risen close to one.

Speaking this morning on RTE's Morning Ireland Professor Nolan called for "caution" and "leadership" at this time. "We've seen an increase in cases and I talk about the increase in cases, they're clustering rather than the reproduction number. He said: "The virus is as it was, highly infectious, and a note of encouragement, we know the measures we can take to prevent the spread of this virus, very careful hand and respiratory hygiene, practicing social distancing where we can and wearing a face covering where that becomes difficult."

"We're also beginning to see people being more sociable, perhaps people being forgetful about the risks of viral transmission and we're seeing clusters of cases emerging in very small numbers of circumstances but those circumstances we advise against, gatherings of large numbers of people, particularly indoors, are the ideal opportunity for this virus to spread."
