Residents of an Austrian village will ring in the new year under a new name - Fugging - after ridicule, especially on social media, became too much to bear

Minutes from a municipal council meeting published today showed that the village of some 100 people 350 kilometres east of Vienna will be named Fugging from 1 January 2021.

Increasing numbers of English-speaking tourists have made a point of stopping in to snap pictures of themselves by the signpost at the entrance to the village, sometimes striking lascivious poses for posting on social media. The village, which is part of the municipality of Tarsdorf and north of Salzburg, has long been a figure of fun in English-speaking media, which have gleefully reported local exasperation at signs being removed.

Finally, a majority of the villagers, and not just those who live near the signpost, decided they had had enough. "I am confirming that it has in fact been decided by the local council. I will not say any more about it," Tarsdorf Mayor Andrea Holzner told Reuters. The decision was also posted on the council's website.
