there is a “growing sense of hopelessness” around the homelessness crisis in Ireland.“If we continue going this way by the time of the next election, there will could be 16,000 homeless people in Ireland,” he said. “That’s the way it’s looking.”“Remember when the figures went past 5,000 - that's not so long ago [and] there was outcry,” he said.

“We've become normalised to reach 16,000 over the next 12 months probably - and we won't bat an eyelid.”Fr McVerry said more homeless people feel “this is their life for years to come” as they cannot find housing. “You have drug users and non-drug users sharing rooms together - in fact, some people first became drug users because they went into homeless hostels.”
