Many Poles will remember 2022 as the year when Russian militarism once again threatened the stability of their state.
In mid-November the war landed abruptly on Polish soil when two farmers in a village close to the border with Ukraine were killed by a stray rocket. For a few brief hours, the West debated over whether the rocket had been launched by Russia. Ukrainian nationals living in Poland can apply for national insurance numbers, enabling them to work legally and access the country’s healthcare and social security system.
This is changing Poland’s demographics, a country of 38m and one of Europe’s most homogenous. Polish nationals accounted for 98% of the population according to the 2021 census. But Russia’s recent tactic of bombarding Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure – leaving many large towns and cities in eastern Ukrainian without power – and renewed attacks by President Vladimir Putin’s forces along the eastern front have deterred many from returning to their homes this winter.
On a wet and cold Friday evening – the night before Christmas Eve – I meet a group of local Polish and Ukrainian volunteers from a charity called 'Szaliki’ as they pack two vans full of food packages and clothes before driving through the night to deliver the supplies to Lviv. The aid was donated by a branch of the German Red Cross and local residents.
On those evenings, Ukrainian refugees – they are entirely women and young children on the night I visit – receive neatly packed plastic bags of rice and pasta. There are tea bags, chocolate, shampoo and nappies. Cans of spam are stacked next to dozens of boxes containing donated winter jackets."Most of the people arrive with little children and just their documents because they hadn’t enough time to pack. They hear that the Russians are coming and just take their children and you go.
Nazis supporting nazis is all that is.
And so, to 2023 A fresh slate for you and for me But it's still status quo 'Neath the eastern snow To the west, Ukranians flee
Now show how many in Spain, France, the UK and the US did so? Per head of population we hare housing far more than these bigger countries, so why are you just highlighting Poland, which is a next door neighbor of Ukraine.. more biased reporting from RTE
Those poles are great
This could read 93% of Poles refused to host Ukrainian refugees and 66% refused to help refugees in some form during the first 5 months of the war. Maybe the Poles know more than we do
Now do Russia - Russia has taken in 2.7 million from Donbass - Russians escaping Ukraine's bombs -why RTE supports the bombing of Russians - I have no idea
And the EU blocked Poland's money.
FF and FG's open door policy has been rejected by Irish people. We are tired of seeing Ireland turn into a dumping ground
This headline is designed to make you think we should be doing more. The reality is , if it's true, the Poles are more brainwashed than the Irish. Meanwhile the US who funds the killing and destruction takes a tiny amount of refugees. That's the real story
'please help us protect ourselves against the Russian invaders whilst simultaneously supporting the Israeli invaders & occupiers'.
Both countries were nazi collaborators.
Of the war...definitely not a war if so its actually the worst fake war ever..
😂, yah. But I wonder what happened for the succeeding 5 months. Word is, the welcome wore thin when the draft dodgers overstayed. Let's hope they've been evacuated back to where they crawled from in the first place.
Leaving the EU sounds attractive.
Lovely. Now deport all Poles alongside all Ukrainians. All the same anyway.
