The move follows a fine of €214,000 imposed by the college authorities on Trinity College Dublin Student Union as a result of a student blockade of the Book of Kells visitor attraction. The €214,000 was equivalent to the amount the blockade had cost in terms of lost revenue, the college authorities said. The income generated from the Book of Kells is vital to keep the university going and it supports initiatives such as student services, the student hardship fund etc.
“The student protests involving blockades of the Book of Kells Experience have had a negative financial impact as visitors could not enter. The statement added: “The university supports students’ right to protest within the rules of the university.”According to the student newspaper, Trinity News, the college has warned payment of the fine may be “a precursor to graduation”.
The newspaper cites an email allegedly sent by the college to Ms Wong warning the fine “becomes a debt to the university that must be paid as a prerequisite to graduation” for all persons involved.
