Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he has been very encouraged by his conversations with new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the outstanding issues with the Northern Ireland Protocol.
"I made it clear that the Irish Government's position is that we don't believe an election at this time is a good thing for Northern Ireland." It is understood Mr Sunak overruled Mr Heaton-Harris last week as he wants to give those talks more time to develop. Mr Coveney said the Irish Government would not be intimidated by threatening statements, or be put off from fulfilling their obligations under the Good Friday Agreement.
"We are not going to be intimidated by people who don't do not reflect the vast majority of people's opinion here in Northern Ireland, who want to see the British and Irish Governments working together for stability, for certainty, for peace, and to ensure that the institutions that were set up nearly 25 years ago can deliver for people in Northern Ireland.
