Ireland Headlines News

While politicians were always targets for some verbal abuse, it seems that the level and the insidious nature of the threats has increased dramatically in recent years, with the publicly known episodes just the tip of the iceberg, writes Stephen Collins

to defend their colleague and attack the hypocrisy of Sinn Féin, which has far more serious and embarrassing skeletons in its cupboard than anybody on the Government side is ever likely to have.Former Fine Gael minister Michael Ring hit the nail on the head when he described the campaign against Paschal Donohoe as a cynical attempt to tarnish the reputation of an exemplary public representative with a formidable track record at home and abroad.

In fact, Donohoe earned the ire of many of his Fine Gael colleagues by refusing to release funds for an election spending splurge in 2020. Because of his policy of putting the country ahead of party advantage, the public finances were in a robust state to deal with the challenging and unexpected events of the past three years. Contrast the healthy state of the Irish economy today with the steady and worrying deterioration in that of our UK neighbours.

Political corruption has increased and decisions made by the political class are causing serious detrimental effects on Irish society such as mass unregulated immigration. This is a country that now has beheadings and young girls beating to death going for a jog. To be expected.

Really Stephen have you spoken to Nurses or Child Protection Social Workers recently!!!!

Any time I am uncertain what to think about a topic, I read Stephen Collins and then I know for sure I need to think the opposite.

Are you for real

The cozy consensus between MSM & government must be broken. That is the real threat to this country as a functioning democracy.

A blog writers post because this isn’journalism writes cringe view on issue to deflect from real issue Goebbels school of propaganda level BS Times I suppose, we expect nothing more

Donohoe hasn't 'given up a lucrative career in the private sector'. In due course and like Hayes, D'Arcy etc before him he will be rewarded with a plum private sector role in thanks for his services to the big capital owning class.

Ohhh you're all loving that Vat reduction aren't you

Irish pol corrs were devastated to a man & woman when the Jobstown show trial failed to send Paul Murphy & 2 other public reps to jail on trumped up charges. I had an interesting online interaction with a former IT pol corr who was incandescent at the not guilty verdicts.

Looking for accountability is not intimidation. This is intimidation

Stephen Collins....property of FFG

Easily bought propaganda. Independent exactly the same.

It’s very simple. This government has demonstrated contempt for the Irish people. Historically Politicians resigned if the failed the public or their office. Now they just sit it out and give themselves big pay rises. People are fed up with them and demand accountability.

He doesn't mention Discraced Damien English He doesn't mention Micael Stone's resignation either Both smoking guns are hardly groundless? What does this say for The Irish time to aid and abet these pervasive activities in government quarters.

The 'level and the insidious nature of the threats has increased dramatically in recent years' is maybe a response to the level of insidious corruption, obfuscation & arrogance of Goverment(s) in 'recent years' Neither is justifiable, but true Journalism should consider both.

Blatant propaganda.

Exactly how is it a 'groundless campaign'? Maybe have a wee think there about what started it all....ideally before printing this utter rubbish.

Such partisan language is deplorable. Linking the questioning of a Minister about breach of ethics rules to intimidation is not justifiable. Calling it 'hysteria' over a 'minor error' makes Stephen sound like an FG spokes person.
