Plans are being drawn up to ensure both the Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate exams will go ahead this year, the Taoiseach has said

Speaking following a meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Covid-19, Leo Varadkar said Minister for Education Joe McHugh and the State Examinations Commission are drawing up options to allow the State exams to be held.

He said the Government do not want people who are hoping to enter third level education later this year "to lose a year ... or half a year" of their lives.

Best of luck getting teachers to supervise these if they do go ahead👍🏻

Predicted grades is the way to go

They should probably let them know what’s on each exam paper (topicwise) so that if they get back to school before this they know what they’ve to teach. Majority should be finished their syllabus anyway so all they need is study.

Guaranteed no students' or teachers' health will be risked so I am interested to see when, where and how it will happen. The JC could possibly happen during TY/5th year, bit tricky to organise staff but it's possible. The LC is another story.

Not sure, these are challenging times, my jnr cert daughter is struggling with online learning (she is an active learner) she has anxiety about family members working on covid wards, grandparents at risk, should we be adding to that anxiety with exam pressure? mentalhealth

I think the Junior Cert should be abandoned for this year. This would make social distancing a little easier to handle in schools. I worry that certain Leaving Cert students will feel under huge pressure now....given the lack of structure in this academic year. V tough 😢

Stupidity at its finest,UK,population of 66 million cancel its GCSEs and A Levels and Ireland with 4.83 million, wants to cramp students into halls for 3 weeks in a pandemic in June, when school has been missed for ages, to do an exam and we don’t know when this pandemic will end

This is why these monthly assessments should have been implented 20 yrs ago or so . We wouldn't be in this predicament at all... Typical Ireland.....

Why can't they roll out continuous assessment If the exams were to go ahead, students are going to get sicker so what's the point of having the exams on?

If they announce that the exams won’t go ahead now, you’ll have a huge number of students in the country downing tools, bored and wanting to chance heading out to meet their friends...defeating all the good work of lockdown. They are putting off the inevitable and I can see why.

What happens if a student has confirmed or signs of covid at the time of the exams?

Maybe could do it July

Not if it puts students at any risk? Will dept and govt be liable

Social distancing will carry on for some time past the summer term. Follow UK’s example regarding grading.

The privileged kids from private schools are going to clean up this year. But then nearly all of the politicians are products of those schools, they have no idea of the challenges that some kids with no broadband or computer at home have in accessing online education. Shameful

Surely they've done Continues Assessment?

Expecting us to miss all this school and just do our LC as if nothing is happening is ridiculous. They need to either do predicted grades or postpone it, unfortunately I really don’t see them cancelling the exams though

I’m not sure he understands how much stress and pressure this is putting on students especially lc this is absolutely disgraceful they should be cancelled

Nobody in their right mind will walk around supervising them or accept their scripts into their homes for correction.

They can’t even do their jobs or attend the dail so why demand this of school kids.

Null & Void

To be fair, secondary level students are competent enough to benefit from online teaching, it may actually be an advantage (getting to pause, rewind instructions etc). If 2 metres distance is presumed acceptable, just spread them 5 or so metres apart. And drop the junior cert ffs

'Avoid the problems of no entry to colleges'. In other words, force LC students to sit exams despite being out of school for 3 months at the end of 6th year, as we can't lose income in 3rd level institutions

Fuck the lot of yas

Useless information, no dates or defined time of the leaving cert. Is it going ahead in June or not? Do I study towards June? It doesn’t look good from these figures, there has been no benefits so far to this lockdown!

RiceCollegeNews That will be interesting to watch. I mean, there is no vaccine. No immunity. No exit strategy from social distancing. Exams will mean our children congregating either outside or inside school. Perhaps they can enlighten us? I don’t see schools back until at least September 2020.

Euros cancelled Olympics cancelled but Joe Noclugh says LC will go ahead!!!!!!!

It would be completely unfair

Give them grades based on predictes grades, teachers are more than qualified to make that call. If students are unhappy with the grade they can resit at a later date

Why would they not defer the Junior cert to the Autumn? Makes no sense.

Can comment on the lc but not on when restrictions will be lifted

When will we get more clarity on practicals ?

Ready to supervise

A political prisoner of conscientiousness seeking International Justice in the United States of America the only other political prisoner that I would know is mr. Bobby Sands rest in peace

At a certain point you have to wonder if we should bother with the junior cert

Great to hear some certainty. Now if only we knew when they’ll happen we’d be away

Yes right
