Gardai and social welfare officers carrying out checks caught one driver trying to evade strict road safety rules.

The lorry was found to have manipulation software installed on the tachograph, which would give an incorrect reading of hours driven.In a statement, gardai for the Laois/Offaly division said on Thursday: "Yesterday Laois Roads Policing Unit conducted two multi-agency checkpoints with members of the Road Safety Authority and officials from the Department of Social Protection.

"The RSA detected one heavy goods vehicle which had with manipulation software installed on the tachograph."Separately a number of fixed charge notices were issued in respect of defective tyres and the offending vehicles were only permitted to proceed once the defective tyres had been replaced."
