Simon Harris has been appointed as the new leader of Fine Gael as he told the party faithful that “there is a helluva lot to get done in the time ahead”. In a rousing speech, Mr Harris said: “I’m up for it. I’m ready.” He was the only candidate to put his name forward to replace outgoing leader and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

In his speech at the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone, Mr Harris said it was “the honour of his life” to become party's new leader. He said that, when he nominated former Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny for Taoiseach on his first day as a TD at the age of 24, he never could have imagined one day taking the job himself.
