The Irish Silver Museum has been opened by the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe in the former Deanery in Waterford and becomes the latest in a series of museum offerings in this historic part of the city.
It involves a showcase of the social, economic and political history of the country through silver while also celebrating the craft and skill of smiths who created the items. Minister Donohoe said: "I know that many of the items in this museum have been repatriated from overseas and collectively they show the richness and diversity in the craft of silver that has been practiced in Ireland for over twelve hundred years."
The Irish Silver Museum offers examples from silversmiths from Dublin, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Youghal, Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir of the 1700s, including Ireland's rare female silversmiths.
