'Significant drops' in air pollution in cities hit by coronavirus, says Irish climatologist

A leading Irish climatologist has said there have been “significant drops” in the levels of air pollution and carbon dioxide over cities where coronavirus has impacted on work and travel.

Prof John Sweeney, who believes we can take guidance from the behavioural changes to tackle the more long-term threat posed by climate change, told the Irish Mirror: “We’ve seen, for example in the canals of Venice, the fish returning. “And therefore what we’re seeing around us in our towns and cities today in terms of a reduction in transports will no doubt have some positive impact in terms of the mortality rate.

He continued: “Those are things which I think we can learn lessons from the present tragic circumstances that we’re in, in terms of not making the mistakes that perhaps we might make were we just to resume everything supercharged in six months or a year’s time.
