All-Ireland Hurling Championship

From teen poster boy, to Harvard and now frontrunner for Hurler of the Year, the life less ordinary of Shane O'Donnell.

And his performances are on the verge of sending Clare into orbit 11 years after they burst through hurling's stratosphere.

A Munster senior medal - the only missing one from his collection - would be a fitting birthday present. Still just 29, he seems to have been around forever, but hurling fans might savour him while they can as he has hinted that work ambitions in America make it unclear if he’ll be playing next year. But the Limerick juggernaut powering towards a first ever Munster six-in-a-row stands in their way for a third provincial final on the bounce.

In last year’s off season he campaigned to have insurance payouts for injured inter-county players who miss work increased - and succeeded - after revealing he was left €5000 out of pocket by his concussion.Last year he was superb. This year though he’s found a new level again. He’s built himself up physically and is a seriously broad unit now, and as good a ball winner inside as there is the game, along with Aaron Gillane.

“I definitely would think there is a model there where there needs to be more trust given over to the player. Give them a programme and tell them to go and do it.‘Why are you not doing it? Do you not want to be here? Is there something you are struggling with?’
