They could well take a big scalp again in the Championship but it’s more important that they develop some consistency as two bad performances either side of a good one ultimately won’t take you anywhere.

Limerick may have a 100% record while Clare are also unbeaten, but Wexford have been the team of the League for me so far.

They have a very highly regarded coach in David Franks, who has been involved with Ballygunner in recent years as they’ve swept up all the major honours. Sometimes a lengthy injury list can ultimately turn out to be a positive, provided it’s at the right time of the year. You don’t want it in the thick of the Championship, but if it comes early in the League, you end up having to play lads that ordinarily may not have been given a chance. Before you know it, you’ve uncovered a hidden gem.

This is a longer-term project for Rossiter that will take a few years and there will be difficult days before this year is out. But if he brings a consistent level of performance to Wexford this year then it will have been a success and a very solid foundation on which to build.Davy Fitzgerald has said that he should be assessed at the end of his second year with Waterford, so we should reserve judgement for now.

So what does success look like for Waterford from here? Probably silverware in Munster and a good performance in an All-Ireland semi-final. I said here last week that Liam Cahill should keep a trick or two up his sleeve for the Championship and, who knows, maybe he has.
