The reopening of Sceilg Mhichíl (Skellig Michael) has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions

The UNESCO World Heritage Site was due to reopen tomorrow after it was closed to visitors following a rockfall earlier this month.

The Office of Public Works confirmed that poor weather and sea conditions today made it impossible for OPW Guide Staff to travel to the island ahead of the planned reopening tomorrow.Sea conditions are expected to improve on Sunday to allow OPW Guide Staff to travel safely to Sceilg Mhichíl.Sceilg Mhichíl lies 12km off the Kerry coast and is only accessible by boat, with vessels limited to 12 people each and making one trip per day only during the season.

The visitor season on the island normally finishes at the end of September and weather and sea conditions make it generally inaccessible after that. The site has become a huge international attraction after it was used as a location for the Star Wars movies in recent years.
