The head of RTÉ has told an Oireachtas Committee that the national broadcaster 'cannot continue to deliver its remit for the people of Ireland' unless its funding is addressed

The head of RTÉ has told an Oireachtas committee that the national broadcaster "cannot continue to deliver its remit for the people of Ireland" unless its funding is addressed.

"RTÉ has highlighted, for many years, that the licence fee system on which Ireland's national public service media is reliant, is utterly broken. She warned: "The core structural funding problems remain, and in fact are deteriorating quickly. Losses to national public service media funding are now estimated to be €65 million annually.

A review found that "RTÉ’s staff body is almost evenly males/female" and that the broadcaster "equals, and in various cases exceeds, national policy objectives and targets for gender related employment, and the review found that the pay differential at RTÉ is approximately 4%, which is significantly less than the 14% for the economy as a whole."

Deputy Hourigan noted organisations dealing with eating disorders had criticised Operation Transformation, and asked how decisions were made as to what is broadcast.

Oh well, time shut it down then. Good riddance

Poor recruitment policies is a drain on the wallet . rte

They are so out of touch with the general public and so are RTÉ!

Rte is a ridiculous waste of money. They put on a Friday night light entertainment show that starts with misery and then the millionaire presenter starts implying that the people who pay him are either racist or sexist depending on the theme of the evening. Let it die defundRTE

We don't care 😂

Good riddance too each and every one of you 🖕🖕🖕🖕

Ok, so don't continue.

Charge the advertisers/sponsers more. I could live without rte in my life, I don't feel I get much value for €160 license fee...cut salaries too.

Cut the ridiculous wage bill.

It hasnt fulfilled its remit to both viewers or artists in years. Time to go!

Cut your wage bill, every other business has had to make sacrifices we can't all just run to the state and ask for more money.

Could start with selling 2fm - serves zero function today. I'd merge TG4 & RTE2 w/ a big emphasis on Irish language content, homegrown, youth & sport. Imho TG4 do a better job w/ their limited budget. RTE One/News need to be reformed - largely become a mouthpiece for the govt.

I don’t think many people watch Rte these days fake news channel pro government.constant repeated programmes sold out some GAA championship games overpaid hosts on ridiculous salaries.not worth the license fee

Ryan Tubrity, Joe Duffy, Ray D'Arcy, Claire Byrne, Marian Finucane, Bryan Dobson. There I've addressed its funding.

In fairness, you guys don't even have to reapply for a broadcasting license. You get carte blanche to propound your govt propaganda as a sop to deflect from your crass attempts to call regurgitated British bilge such as dancing with the stars as actual quality tv scheduling.

New presenters, problem solved.

Cut the highest wages down to a third of their previous position. I think Ireland will survive if Miriam and Ryan leave.

Good because its shite, I feel for those who work hard behind the scenes but not 1 teeny tiniest bit for those overpaid 'stars' WE pay for, get yourself together do your job and stop asking the government for us to pay your wages, we have enough site been landed on our doorstep

Yes have to agree needs major slim down of staff way way to many pulling out of a good thing at taxpayers expense. 3 orchestra should be moved to concert hall and cut back dramatically for example

Sell Montrose, relocate, get rid of the likes of Duffy and Tubridy. Crazy how they have prime real estate.

Excellent,👋👋👋 you won't be missed

It won’t solve all the problems but maybe control spending on areas like Ryan Tubridy. Is he really that popular? Just a thought. Shoot stuff on phones. The cameras are really good these days

When you're paying people to the levels ye are in Rte you can't with a straight face come out with this

boycottthetvlicense

Abolish the TV licence!

Here we go 📺 licence increase incoming 😂

It’s not worth the paper it’s written on.

I don’t want RTÉ

Good luck to anyone on a good salary but the top presenters on Rte wages are ridiculous so no point coming the poor mouth with the ordinary worker on the street

Brillant,go subscription like all private broad casters ,if people want content they pay for the shite ,biased reporting and political arse licking that rte are famous for ,we won't mention the salaries Jesus Christ for sitting on there hole,

Cut your cloth to measure so rte

It needs ptope accountability first, the Conservative editorials need to go and a balanced coverage of sport needs to be implemented, pandering to the D4 Star chamber has to change before more funding

Close up. Do deal with bbc . Rte is embarrassing. Jobs for boys.

Stop paying so many chiefs so much money. Simple.

Good, after their constant daily diatribe of covid BS over the past 2 years they need to shut down

Sell it, lease it, rent it, close it… but no more money… it’s a great spot for collecting fund…

Put all of you on minimum wage, what a lot of the country is on

For the people of Ireland 😅

No more funding for RTÉ until: 1) Presenters are stopped being paid astronomical salaries, 2) RTÉ stops being a mouth-piece for the Government, 3) National films, dramas, shows etc are made instead of continuous repeats of already overdone films.

Gangsters

Must be some serious wages being spent on Fair City, Operation Transformation and the news… where’s all the advertising money the government gives you gone?

i dont watch rte tv or radio, same crowd all the time, useless service. overpaid and definantey not worth any fee. not 1c per week in my book.

Define remit and while we’re on the agenda of Irelands broadcasting remit, Why is this company so bios towards to current government. For example: the Late Late Show and Mr Tubridy are so obviously transparent towards FF. During the pandemic the orchestrated messages were evident

Put it in the Bin so 🤛

Grand so. Lots of business’s fail because their product is of a low standard and people don’t want it.

^^RTE says RTE wants people to be forced to pay even more for it even if they don't watch it

Needs to be an opt in opt out service

Doesn't deliver anyway. 90% of the programmes are from the UK or US that people have already seen. If no one on RTE is paid over €50,000 a year then I would say yes put it up

RTE only serves the CCP & the Democratic Party! It will not be a pity if it disappears

The only thing that needs to be addressed is the outrageous salary's they are paying to their substandard broadcasters

Oh well.

Shut it down!!

GTFO....whinging gits are at it again.....reduce ur wage bill...re-structure....its not rocket science

Good luck paying enough for nothing

How much is she paid herself?

It isn’t delivering.

If RTE are so brilliant ,stand on their own financially or not ,let the market decide and as for the 'remit' ,this may have been a factor once but not in today's connected world.

AKA….”we want another pay increase “
