It was August 1980 when the Roscommon footballers last won a Championship match at Croke Park. As Robert F Kennedy Jnr lines up an unlikely bid for the White House as an independent candidate, the last Kennedy to pitch for the US presidency, his uncle Ted, was eliminated by the incumbent Jimmy Carter at the democratic convention four days after Roscommon beat Armagh in the All-Ireland semi-final.
The final went down as one of the most controversial ever. Kerry were bidding for three-in-a-row; Roscommon were chasing their first title since 1944 and were 1-2 to 0-0 in front after 12 minutes. Roscommon stalwart, the late Dermot Earley, once said that the “fear of failure overcame the will to win”.
It was a different story 12 months later when they led Meath throughout only for Sean Boylan’s side to pull off another Houdini act, kicking seven of the last eight points to win by one. A qualifier defeat to Clare two years ago was a huge disappointment and effectively sealed Anthony Cunningham’s exit as manager.
