Event featuring five presidential hopefuls hears warning that Republicans ‘have become party of losers’

Photograph: Scott McIntyre/The New York Timestook part in a hostile primary debate on Wednesday, clashing in a competition for second place behind absentee frontrunner Donald Trump.

Taking the stage in his home state, Mr DeSantis recalled that Mr Trump often said “Republicans were gonna get tired of winning”. “The world is on fire,”Ms Haley said. In 2016, Mr Trump, she said, was the “right president at the right time. I don’t think he’s the right president now.” Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina again committed to supporting a national ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. He argued that 15 weeks was a reasonable limit, and called on Ms Haley and Mr DeSantis to support one, too.

Mr Trump has continued to dominate the field in Iowa and nationally, despite facing four criminal indictments and a civil fraud case involving his businesses for which he took the stand in New York this week.
