Sinead O’Connor was the best - utterly unique, fearlessly defiant, a gorgeous soul, a fascinatingly flawed hero of our generation.
This fierce, insanely-talented young woman with the shaved head, the arrestingly beautiful face, and the huge voice howling out the words of Mandinka: “I don’t know now shame, I feel no pain.”She didn't intend to be a role model - but she was. When a record company executive told her to be more girly, she shaved her head. When pregnant at 20, she was warned that having a baby would kill her career - and went off and had her son Jake anyway.
She was willing to put herself out there honestly through her often uncomfortable personal testimonies. She raised awareness of the true extent of mental illness and issues like childhood trauma and abuse, by revealing all sides of it. As she has said herself in her recent autobiography Rememberings: “Everyone wants a pop star, see? But I’m a protest singer. I had to get stuff off my chest. I had no desire for fame.”
