With private cars to blame for a large portion of Ireland's emissions, the OECD suggests measures including increasing the cost of petrol and diesel cars and using the planning system to cut reliance on private cars, to help Ireland meet energy goals |

That is according to OECD Director Rodolfo Lacy, who presented its 2020 Environmental Performance Review for Ireland.

The report also calls for the Government to consider congestion charges, particularly in the greater Dublin area, and address the issue of parking subsidies in the form of free workplace parking. It said while the planning system has improved to promote compact growth, it should be used to ensure any new developments have access to public transport and active travel links.

Mr Ryan said that in both agriculture and transport the move to greener practices will result in better systems. On water in Ireland, the OECD Environmental Performance Review says while organic pollution in Ireland's rivers and groundwater supplies remains low by EU standards, water bodies have suffered increasing nutrient pollution and urgent measures are needed.

Great...just what we need...more taxes!!

OECD can go get lost, no way should the cost of petrol and diesel cars be increased, unfairly targets car enthusiasts, people with no other suitable options who need them, first time drivers buying cheaper older cars and those who cannot afford to spend alot on a car

Take all the tax off electric cars might help.

I have never heard such a load of shite, if they increase the prices for cars any further in Ireland we’ll be back to the horse and cart. Nobody will be able to afford transport and with public transport run the way it is the country will be a bigger joke than it already is.

Electric cars are not for everyone. Removing petrol/diesel cars off us won’t solve the problem. Saw recently that whales take 4 Amazon rainforests of carbon dioxide, so maybe concentrate on saving them and increasing their numbers.

In the country we need to drive. I would love to get the bus into work but there are no buses. Rising diesel and petrol is not the answer providing propped infrastructure is. The government will just be hitting people in the pocket as per the norm.

‘Punish the people!’ Change

We'll as long as the Rich or the Chinese don't ever have to pay any Carbon taxes and ordinary Irish people do instead for them, RTÉ and the Leinster Government will be happy, that's the main thing.

Road pricing please

Ffs These people actually hate people that live in rural Ireland

For many people outside of Dublin, public transport is non existent. Putting up prices will just annoy people, there has to be alternatives put in place first.

Next to impossible to live in cities due to high rents & unaffordable, often poor value for money housing. People commute for good reasons so this just looks like more costs for people who have already been priced out of the system. Another reason for embracing remote working.

How about Lowering cost of electric cars take away the tax on them , build charging ports at every petrol station .. but no just bike up fuel costs instead and punish people who cabt afford to make the change

Go to hell We are taxed enough already.

Ridiculous. Instead of actually tackling the problem, we just suggest increasing the cost of living for people already struggling and people who have no other choice but to drive.

I guess a lot of the QECD members live within the M50 boundaries

Have u just woke up to that fact.. ?Go back to sleep

Balderdash....just an excuse to raise taxes! Pandemic, loads of people out of work and on PUP but sure...let's lash a few quid extra on to stuff..ya know to help the environment like. Flim flam greens nonsense

If the Irish Gov are so worried about energy goals & emissions used in Ireland! Why doesn't the Gov give Irish Citizens grants to buy new 'Electric Vehicle's'. Many countries around the world are trying this! Ireland needs to be more 'Green' for the future of Ireland ☘️🇮🇪 Agree ?

Hmmmm🤔....while the NTA goes out and buys 35 double deck coaches at a cost of €700k for Buseireann ....these coaches do 6mpg....🙄🤣

The more suitable approach would be for a family who have two cars to cut down to one car. This would cut emissions greaty

Average people can't afford battery cars. The OECD can fuck off

The government makes a fortune from the motor industry. Electric cars for 25k that can do 300 miles then people will move over. A proper charging network would be nice.

Maybe sort out the sheer incompetence of successive Governments and the utter waste of public money that goes on first, then redirect said resources to Health, Housing / planning and green policies before taxing people further. No excuse for not doing it in that order.

Work from home if possible…? Every bit contributes

And here we go again ! Its all theyre good for in ireland. More bloody taxation. Exhausted cigarettes n alcohol. Oil again, ho hum. Under the guises of carbon emission bullshit ! Tell me, where is all the power gonna come from for all the electric cars ? Nuclear power on a return

Ffs if there was a proper transport system that wasn't a rob ppl would use it more it's a disgrace

What planning system

The only Capital City in Europe with an airport not connected to the City by tram/rail/underground rail system despite Billions spent on the terminal 2. Not very clever FF/FG public transport planning over the last hundred years.

Ha

Right. Have you looked at how quickly someone can go with Public Transport from Heathrow to Westminster vs Lucan town to St Stephens Green? I did. It’s over double the length in England but over the double of time on a bus in Ireland. infrastructure needed & emissions would drop

Nothing to do with internal combustion engines. All to do with one of Europe’s worst public transport infrastructures. They won’t admit that though.

How about build and invest in a proper public transport system. Just an idea 🤷🏻‍♂️

The top 15 ships in the world produce more CO2 than all the cars. You're talking shit

Utter BS, industry are Ireland’s biggest polluters fiannafailparty finegael greenparty_ie

Tax is always the answer. And Let’s ignore the fact big business are the biggest polluters, despite their pathetic attempts at “greenwashing”

Why not go back to hitching up the horse and cart ,or putting milk back into glass bottles ,people have had over a year of fucking hell and the oecd wish to punish people by way of taxing the bollox out of them . Go way ye clowns

Typical urbanite champagne socialism policies of course championed by the Greens. Reason most of us own cars is cos of lack of alternatives. Cycling is only an option in urban areas and a lot of Ireland is not urban.

And how is that going to happen in rural Ireland where public transport is scarce?

When there are realistic alternatives then that may be an idea....before that it just makes life more difficult for people especially those at the lower end of the socioeconomic scale. But this is never reported by the OECD just blunt instruments

The answer to everything in this country is to raise prices. We don’t have a decent transport system so yes more people need to drive.

Driving a 2 tonne SUV to drop a 15Kg child in school 2km away in not sustainable or healthy in any way. First, improve park and ride facilities for those who live outside the city and for schools. Then, ban cars from outside schools and reduce parking in the city centre

Sure but the reason for private cars has been due to little or zero public spending on large scale infrastructure projects. Can have one without the other

They are clearly unfamiliar with our weather.

Well that's one sneaky way to bring in yet another price increase. bulls..t

This is all so, so sinister from those in power in Ireland. Increasing the cost = strangle regular people on car prices so they’re forced to abandon them, even if they have no other choice Use the planning system = make it impossible to live anywhere other than a town or city

Why are you interviewing people in the urban, I have 7 km to a bus route, a choice of 2 buses a day when I get there, none of them going in the direction of my work 25 km away. I’ll ask one question. What would I do without a car?

Good luck trying to bring in water charge s.Absolute toxic for any political party to address. The Irish pay enough taxes charges for everything how about the Government budgets better.......2 billion for a children's Hostipal? 🤔

Agriculture is by far the biggest contributor to emissions in Ireland.

Perhaps they should increase public transport to rural areas we still need to drive for shopping ECT we have no choice putting up diesil prices screws us just transition comes to mind most of us have old cars can't afford electric

OECD are useless. No other way to meet energy goals than tax the shite out of joe public. The answer to every problem is more tax. The government love them

Hasn't be huge amount of private cars of the past 14 months surely, compared to before the pandemic?

Meanwhile a few gobshites, assisted by a few gobshites councilors, are holding up a TRIAL of a cycle lane on the Strand Road

Hey RTÉ, you've probably missed the memos. CitizAssembly on climate change was 3 years ago. ClimateEmergency was voted 2 years ago. climatecaseire was last summer. Time to stop your denial loop and play your part in spreading info to the general public! DailyClimateShow

Laughable, start by taxing air travel not vital transport for rural Ireland.

70% of emissions globally are by 100 large companies. Penalising those that cannot afford an electric vehicle is totally unfair.
