Ireland's agonising defeat to Canada is the most watched women’s team sport event in Irish television history, according to figures released on Monday by RTE.The state broadcaster’s coverage of the Women’s World Cup broke audience records, with the average share of viewing, excluding Ireland games, at 20.7 percent.Meanwhile, average streams per match on RTÉ Player, excluding Ireland matches, were more than double the number seen in 2019.
And Ireland’s opening game against Australia, which drew a World Cup group stage attendance record of over 75,000 in Sydney, was the biggest live event of the year on RTÉ Player with 368,000 live streams. Only last year’s men’s final between Argentina and France drew a bigger number of streams since the start of the Player service.
An average of 333,000 people tuned into RTÉ2’s coverage of Sunday’s World Cup final, which saw Spain topple England to become champions for the first time. Another 69,400 streamed the game. RTE will provide live coverage of September's historic Nations League clash with Northern Ireland, which takes place at the Aviva Stadium.
