It is hailed by proponents as a justified means of catching criminals and terrorists as well as helping to identify victims and the vulnerable.
According to a report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the US, Asian and African Americans were up to 100 times more likely to be misidentified, compared to white men, on existing facial recognition systems. Native Americans were the most likely to be misidentified. A separate report by the University of Essex into the system used by the Metropolitan Police in London found four out of five people it identified as possible suspects are innocent.
Other UK police forces in Hampshire, Humberside, North Wales and South Yorkshire are piloting similar technology.Britain’s court of appeal ruled in 2020 that the use of the technology by South Wales Police breached both privacy rights and equality laws.
While some cities in the US have banned its use by government agencies, others hire technology from private companies. The FBI has its own database of more than 400 million photos, including from driving licences.There are many. Three of the biggest - Amazon, Microsoft and IBM - have all moved to stymie use of their systems by police in recent years.

They are able to identify criminals without this technology but that doesn't matter since every scumbag gets a slap on the wrist for each of his 10s of convictions. Gardaí know the offenders. It's the courts and education that needs improvement here not technology. Anyone can go on this poll and vote as much as they like for whatever option they support. Should not be taken as an accurate account of how people feel about this issue. More likely to be used in the next lockdown to fine people than to catch actual fucking criminals.

Facial recognition technology for use by gardaí plannedThe Minister for Justice has said the introduction of legislation to enable gardaí to use facial recognition technology in criminal investigations 'is not about mass surveillance.' Besides that, the State want it for surveillance of undesirables, i.e. people who protest against the State. Not for the Common Good.
