The first public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into US President Donald Trump begin today

US diplomats Bill Taylor and George Kent will testify before Congress on President Trump's dealings with Ukraine.

According to transcripts of his closed door testimony, Mr Taylor - Acting US Ambassador to Ukraine - expressed concerns that military aid to Ukraine was tied to the opening of investigations and he said there was an "irregular channel" of policymaking that included Mr Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

Some Republicans have defended Mr Trump's dealings with Ukraine by saying he was motivated by a desire to root out corruption there and get to the bottom of the election meddling four years ago. The anonymous whistleblower set off the impeachment probe after Mr Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in a phone call on 25 July to investigate the Joe Biden and Hunter Biden - who was on the board of a Ukranian gas company - on unspecified allegations of corruption. None were removed from office, although Richard Nixon resigned as he faced almost certain impeachment in 1974 over the Watergate scandal.

House Democrats consider the open hearings as crucial to building public support for a vote on articles of impeachment -formal charges - against Mr Trump.
