Prison officers want gardai to police jails as dangerous threats to staff increase

Prison officers want gardai to police jails to protect staff facing “violent intimidation” from inmates.

The Prison Officers Association said wardens are constantly being threatened by locked up thugs and gang members and want the gardai to help try and stop it. In recent weeks it emerged that numerous staff at the high-security Portlaoise Prison had to take time off sick over ‘stress’ caused by mobster ‘Fat’ Freddie Thompson.

Assistant General Secretary of the POA, Gabriel Keaveney, and the union is looking to meet with Commissioner Harris on a number of subjects concerning officers.
