Dublin City Council says it will 'deal' with any legal challenges to proposed restrictions on private cars in the city centre with more space and priority to be given to cyclists and pedestrians.

Dublin City Council says it will "deal" with any legal challenges to proposed restrictions on private cars in the city centre with more space and priority to be given to cyclists and pedestrians.

Chief executive Owen Keegan said details of further plans will be ready in a couple of weeks which could involve a ban on motorised vehicles in some areas after 11am and the temporary pedestrianisation of the College Green area. The proposal was generally supported by councillors at the May meeting of the city council which was held with limited numbers in Dublin Castle.

DubCityCouncil you do know about lack of infrastructure from the wider commuter belt. Cars are not optional for some. Cart before the horse. If I could cycle a 100k round trip each day 😏

We once had a wide streets commission.

So will this virus put to high density, high rise planning.

I don’t think car-park owners should be indulged, but is there a good solution for the conflict between the need for cycle lanes and loading bays?

We also need to stop urgently the free parking for civil servants. It produces such a burden on everyone else and prevents civ servs to even start thinking about public transport options. At least it needs to be a taxable privilege like a company car.

IrishCycle Great news long overdue, the city is been held to ransom by a few wealthy rats

All these anti-car scum need to be rounded up and interned. Lefties are a cancer on society.

Yay

The old 'Medieval city' line... they never stop to question whether or not cars belong in a medieval city.

It's a joke. Bewleys just shut because there is not the footfall in the city any more since they started forcing cars out. People only go in to work then leave. Grafton street in serious decline, and this is their solution. Less people in the city.

But when it rains nobody will go into town!

Noel Smyth and his lobbyist cronies getting far too much column space there. We don't need a shadowy group of car park owners presented for the sake of 'Balance'.

This is what happens when you leave a cyclist in charge OwenKeegan needs to be relieved of his duties in DubCityCouncil

Surely DCC can’t overrule the planning laws (even if it is temporary) anbordpleanala. Temporary or not, any changes need to work for all aspects of the running of the, city and take more than just pedestrians and cyclists in to account (the economy is also very important here)

That's great news!!! 👏👏

Noel Smyth keen to go down in history as the man who wanted more Irish people to die in a global pandemic? All to maintain criminal levels of car parking fees? Not much community spirit in evidence there.

It's also important to bring in presumed liability (which means that the driver in any crash is *presumed* to be liable, but if they can disprove this, they're not liable); it's a huge safety factor for people on bicycles & in cars because it makes people drive more cautiously

Unless this is done, and done right, the city will be in gridlock for next 2 years. Those who absolutely have to drive, including people with mobility issues and commercial drivers, will be stuck in traffic created by people who *would* cycle if the protection was there.

Watch the city centre empty . Shops and industry need to be serviced and you can’t do that on a bus , especially when only 10 people can get on it at one time

Surely you mean pedestrians and then cyclists. Pedestrians need to be kept safe from dangerous cyclists.

Fantastic news

Can somebody please insure cyclists read this properly and remind them that pedestrians are also on the streets and roads, thanks

And why not. Who said car is king.
