Preventing sunburn in dogs and cats and keeping them cool during the heatwave

Dogs and cats may be covered in fur, but they are still susceptible to sunburn, dehydration and overheating like the rest of us during very hot weather.

Dogs that are particularly susceptible to suffering from sunburn are those with short or thin fur that allow easy UV penetration to skin, canines with low melanin levels in the skin, and hairless breeds, according to Wag. Sun burn presents in pets much like it does in humans, with reddened, warm, or flaking skin present. If your animal has these symptoms, they need to be moved indoors to to a shaded area.

To prevent sunburn in dogs, you can use sunscreen. However, it is vital to use a product that is specifically made for dogs. Always do a patch test on your pets to make sure that the animal-friendly sunscreen you have gotten does not cause an allergic reaction.You can also get sun shirts for your pets that acts as a physical UV ray blocker to prevent sunburn.
