PFA Ireland chief Stephen McGuinness says online abuse is having negative effects on the careers of young footballers.
“I don’t think people are used to players maybe being honest about their performance,” said McGuinness. “Very few players acknowledge that it was actually down to themselves. “What we say to players is, if you are going to put something on social media, are you happy for Tony O’Donoghue to interview you as you say this and it goes on the Six-One News.“The one piece of advice we give to players is, take 24 hours. After a game, give yourself 24 hours.
McGuinness doesn’t have a presence on X or Instagram, because of the inclination by many users to engage negatively on the platforms.“I’m very surprised to see the reaction , if I’m being honest, from supporters. But that’s the world we live in, unfortunately.
