EXCLUSIVE: 'Deodorising sachets' were used to mask the pong, while experts also had to deal with infestations of rats, mice, moths, slugs and ants last year

Pest controllers were called to investigate a bad smell coming from underneath the Dáil chamber in Leinster House last year, while also dealing with infestations of rats, mice, moths, slugs, and ants in the seat of the national parliament.

In October, rats in an adjoining laneway had become such an issue that the risk of “non-target species” being poisoned by toxic bait in the area was “acceptable” in the circumstances, and a decision was made to pursue a “riddance” strategy. Accordingly, a treatment for black ants had to be carried out in the toddler room, back garden, and another classroom of the creche last May.
