There is an expectation in Government that a 'time limited and conditional' ban is now likely to be introduced

There is an expectation in Government this evening that a"time limited and conditional" ban is now likely to be introduced.

It follows advice from the Attorney General which was sought by Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien. There is not a firm view yet on when any ban might be introduced, although some have suggested that it could run in conjunction with the moratorium on electricity disconnections.Earlier this month, a group of Fianna Fáil TDs called for a temporary evictions ban following a concerning rise in the number of notices to quit issued to tenants in recent weeks.

This week, the Tánaiste said such a temporary ban would result in fewer people losing their homes this winter. However, he warned that it could also accelerate the number of landlords leaving the rental market leading to higher levels of homelessness next year.

Tax rent according to its level ? Nobody thought of that yet ? Higher the rent higher the tax otherwise no landlord has anything to gain by keeping rent in a livable sum

People should be able to do what they want with their houses, considering landlords pay the government's tax of 52%. If the ban comes in, then every landlord will sell up which will lead to homelessness and yet we are housing refugees before our own again !!

Rents should be capped on price of its mortgage... Only in Ireland you can have an asset that pays itself and generate an income and why is that Because the government allowed it to happen in 2007/2008 a 2 bedroom apartment Rent was 800/900 euro... Are salaries double now?

Hosing is a commodity, not a right. The sooner some people get this through their thick skulls, the better. There is no free lunch. This will push landlords out, and with it, available rental proprlerties with them. Everything will be sale only, and people will be truly shafted.

It will just result in more landlords selling up as soon as the ban is lifted. Small landlords are not the enemy here. The housing crisis has was caused and made exponentially worse by FF & FG.

No doubt in 6 months time it will be the usual. Oh why is there nothing available to rent anymore as Daft point to a new record low in available rental properties

Irish people defending landlords is honestly so very confusing and sickening given our history being abused by the landlord class. Ban landlords and socialise all housing.

Why I'm busting my ass to pay rent then? If this pass everyone will stop paying. Goodbye economy

So if tenants don't pay their rent what happens?

Time for this populist govt to go

So basically everyone can stop paying their rent for a few months?
