Padraig Amond on family ties, Carlow GAA and his Waterford FC ambitions

The last time an Amond scored two goals at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise, they did so covertly and ended up in hot water.

Back then, Amond was a highly regarded hurler with Carlow’s minors and he scored 2-4 in a Leinster semi-final win over Offaly in Portlaoise. Ahead of tonight’s clash against league leaders Shelbourne, Amond said: “I was there at the weekend and I was able to bring my kids.“One of the hurling selectors was sitting behind me as his young fella was playing with Aaron.

“And for the footballers to go out and do the same on Sunday, and claw something from the game when it looked like they were done and dusted, was brilliant.” “It’s brilliant to be back to see those games in the flesh, it’s different from watching them on TV. You can be there, live.“It’s a lot easier stepping up and taking one yourself than watching someone taking it. Fair play to him, he did brilliantly and he deserves all the credit he got for it.“At one stage there were three of us travelling up - there was my older brother John, myself and Aaron all playing at the same time.
