Overcrowding conditions 'soul-destroying' for nurses

It is"impossible" to provide safe care to patients in overcrowded settings along with the threat of transmissible viruses in hospitals, according to Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation President and advanced nurse practitioner at Beaumont Hospital Karen McGowan.

She said patients do not do well in busy and manic environments as she outlined the knock on effects in terms of their recovery. What ye need to understand is that the staff is not there to man all these beds as it is and our young people that qualify want to travel that's the reality.

Another point of view is people are not taking good care of themselves resulting in sickness, for example taking flu vaccines or avoiding gatherings when a new wave of COVID is around.
