According to the Health Service Executive the vacant posts equate to 480,000 hours not being provided to children who are on waiting lists for services. There are 52,000 children waiting for initial assessment and therapy.Nearly 8,000 are awaiting physiotherapy and over 13,000 are waiting for occupational therapy. The information is revealed in a parliamentary reply given to Sinn Féin's health spokesman David Cullinane.
He said the waiting lists are heartbreaking for families and called for more training places to increase the pool of graduates.
The management of the disability services is such a shambles that the staff are moving into the pvt sector. When i meet with the disability teams they admit that their teams are failing. Nobody listens to the parents or the clinicians
The new disability teams are understaffed and overloaded. Ours has 527 children with only 1 SLT and 1 OT. The staff are inexperienced and overwhelmed. Journalists should ask about staff turnover. Our EIT was running at 50% staff and then lost most of those staff in 9 months
And parents are being told that schools will provide the resources, without a diagnosis or even an initial assessment. More and more needing OT and SLT support, which schools are not equipped to provide.
Big problem with the public sector is that there are far too many unskilled staff in some departments and far too little skilled in others, Defence forces the ratio of admin to serving personnel is ridiculous but you can't get rid of the deadwood, you can't even make them work.
It would make more sense to contract out to private services. No maternity , sick, holiday leave to deal with. These entitlements only add massively to the problem.
Is there any way around shortage of qualified SLT such as mature students attending a conversion course part time? Or dept of ed & related agencies training up staff internally w view to them staying and providing SLT service once qualified through such a route?
This is due to a global shortage of physiotherapists and SLTs.
