The Chief Constable of the PSNI has asked for a senior police officer from outside Northern Ireland to lead the investigation into alleged breaches of Covid-19 restrictions at the funeral of veteran republican Bobby Storey last week.
Stormont's Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill has strongly rejected claims that she breached public health guidelines. In a statement, Chief Constable Simon Byrne said he has spoken to the Chair of the National Police Chiefs' Council to request the appointment. He said the person appointed will "oversee and direct the Police Service of Northern Ireland's investigation of potential breaches"."The Police Service of Northern Ireland is also in receipt of a complaint from a member of the public regarding police actions leading up to the funeral on 30 June 2020.It has been claimed that senior PSNI officers discussed policing and stewarding arrangements for the funeral with members of Sinn Féin.
