Rural Ministers warn of ‘body blow’ to sector as 53 new Covid-19 cases confirmed

There is growing pessimism among Government Ministers that pubs will be given the green light to reopen next week amid increasing levels of Covid-19 cases.

Meanwhile, five workers at the Carroll Cuisine food processing factory in Tullamore, Co Offaly have tested positive for Covid-19. The results emerged after an employee informed the company they had tested positive for the virus. The company said it had tested all 330 employees and four other staff tested positive and are now also self-isolating.

Last Thursday saw a spike of 85 new cases. This was followed by 38 extra cases on Friday and 45 on Saturday in what the department’s acting chief medical officer Dr Ronan Glynn called a “clearly concerning trend”.
