People have been advised to stay out of the water on Laytown and Bettystown beach in Co Meath after a high level of the bacteria was found.
Meath County Council says a worrying increased amount of E. coli was discovered from water samples taken by engineers after heavy rainfall in recent days. which could take a couple of days. The Council will continue to test the water in the meantime until it reaches a satisfactory and safe quality level. It said it will keep the public updated on the issue.
The Laytown and Bettystown beach is a popular haunt for sea swimmers, some of whom recently featured on the Ray Darcy Show on RTE Radio.The beach is used by thousands of people every week in the north east and the world's only beach horse race meeting under rules is held there once a year every September.
