Off-duty garda seriously injured in hit-and-run

The man, who is in his 50s, was cycling near Drumcolliher at around 7.15pm yesterday when he was struck from behind by a car.

The driver failed to remain at the scene and the cyclist was discovered lying seriously injured on the roadside.It is understood he is being treated for life-changing leg injuries.General Secretary, Antoinette Cunningham, said:"The thoughts of the association - and especially his local AGSI Branch members in Limerick - are with our colleague and his family at this time."We are available to provide support for our AGSI colleague in the coming weeks and months.

A woman, aged in her 20s, has been arrested and a car was seized as part of the investigation into the Limerick incident.The scene has been examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road has since reopened. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and road-users who may have camera footage to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Wishing the victim a full recovery and I hate to have to point out that at the end of the report we see a Garda car parked on a footpath! The presumption of drivers, the view that they are the only people who matter is a key cause of road violence.
