Michelle O'Neill says she kept to regulations at Belfast funeral, but she is 'sorry' for more hurt caused to grieving families

Sinn Féin Stormont deputy first minister Michelle O'Neill has said she kept to regulations at Bobby Storey's funeral in west Belfast this week but is "sorry" for more hurt caused to grieving families.

"We have made good progress in this despite all the difficulties. My commitment is to continue this work.Earlier, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald also apologised for any hurt caused by the large crowds that lined the streets for Mr Storey's funeral. "Can I also say that I do understand that looking at the images of very busy pathways in west Belfast and taking all of that in obviously has jolted and has caused some hurt among some of those families, and for that I am very sorry.

She said she "absolutely, categorically" does not accept claims that it is 'one rule for Sinn Féin and another rule for others'. "He's not any more special than any other loved one or any other friend lost to anyone else", Ms McDonald said. Stormont stayed closed for three years after Sinn Féin pulled out of government over the cash for ash controversy, with a mechanism put in place to deal with such problems if they arose again. First Minister Ms Foster refused to stand aside while the cash for ash row, in which her DUP party was centrally involved, was investigated.
