Dogs Trust Ireland is warning owners about the dangers of chocolate toxicity in dogs this Easter after last year's celebrations saw a three-fold increase in the numbers of dogs admitted for emergency veterinary treatment.
Additionally, Dogs Trust conducted its own survey of Irish dog owners and found a gap in awareness of which foods are poisonous to dogs and which are safe.The survey questioned 2,249 dog owners in Ireland aged 18 and over and found that 22% of them admitted that their dog had eaten chocolate in the past five years. Of that number, only 31% of owners contacted the vet afterwards.
Dogs Trust is also urging owners to be wary of other threats to dogs that are closely associated with Easter such as daffodils and Easter treats like hot cross buns, given their raisin content. It was also shown that there are other ingestible materials that some owners did not know are poisonous such as grapes and onions.
