Ireland had the right to opt out of the agreement; however, yesterday the Cabinet agreed it would sign up to it.

There is “nothing that does not benefit Ireland” in the EU’s new asylum and migration pact, the Justice Minister has said.

Speaking yesterday, Justice Minister Helen McEntee said Ireland would find itself “left alone as a country” to deal with the challenges of rising migration if it refused to sign up to the pact.this morning, she said the agreement will have a positive impact on the State’s ability to deal with migration.“This, as a whole, is a major effort by the EU to manage what is a really difficult situation at the moment.

This process is called ‘secondary movement’ and Minister McEntee said the pact would have a “huge impact” on the way the State handles such cases.
