It is by far the biggest drama opening ever for the on-demand service and viewing figures are now expected to go through the roof

Normal People looks set to shatter all records by pulling in four million downloads on the RTE Player.

The Irish drama followed the troubled love affair of a young Irish couple, Connell and Marianne, played by Kildare star Paul Mescal and Londoner Daisy Edgar-Jones, from school to Trinity College. The huge interest helped BBC Three, who funded the show, to achieve its greatest ever week for streaming on the iPlayer with 21.8 million views.

“We’re very proud to air it on RTÉ, particularly at a time that people at home need some entertainment and escapism.” But many fans, who were desperate for Connell and Marianne to live happily ever after, were disappointed by the open ending.
